DOT compliance refers to successfully meeting all requirements put forth by the United States Department of Transportation (USDOT) and FMCSA, both federal agencies, appointed to enforce and develop rules and regulations in the safe operation of commercial motor vehicles. USDOT rules apply to specific classes of commercial vehicles based primarily on weight class, passenger quantity, and cargo classification (hazardous). Any vehicles matching these categories are required to register with the Department of Transportation and are assigned a USDOT number. Drivers of these classes of vehicles must comply with State and Federal rules to operate legally.
Typically, if you operate vehicles that are under 10,001 lbs (alone or in combination (trailers)), for commercial purposes, or carry less than 8 passengers for a FEE or Less than 15 passengers including the driver, and/or do not carry hazardous materials you may not be required to have a USDOT Number. State and local requirements must be researched to ensure you are legal to operate your specific vehicle/combination. All other commercial vehicles are required to operate with a USDOT Number.
